Hot Fuss Reviews (606 Reviews)

Summary: Review: Rating:
An Excellent Album if You Like Modern Brit/Pop/Synth Rock
The Killers first release "Hot Fuss" was extremely refreshing among the over-abundance of alternative/pop/rock bands lately like The Strokes, The Vines, Bush, etc. that all sound the same. So at first listen of the Killers "Hot Fuss" I was in love. While the sound is definitely inspired by the late '70's and early '80's brit/pop bands and american pop/punk bands their album struck me due to it's innovation of quirky, fun lyrics and up-beat danceable music.

The Killers' calling card has been the fantastic song "Somebody Told Me" about ex-lover's jabs on a love gone wrong by cheating (which we all have experienced) and the ever-so catchy "Mr. Brightside". I still can listen to both of these singles and not get sick of them. This Las Vegas group shines with the quirky Brandon Flowers on vocals and keyboards and Dave Keuning on guitars making "Hot Fuss" an excellent album if you like modern brit/pop/synth rock.

Hot Fuss
This is a great album - it contains some radio friendly tunes, but stays true to the bands artistic vision. Well produced, great song writing - a rare talented group in a dismal modern pop environment. I typically listen to classic rock, but every once in a while a band comes along that demands your attention - The Killers are certainly that...

Check out the track "All The Things That I Have Done" - one of the best songs I have heard in the last few years.

My first Killers CD
My first exposure to the Killers was through the song "All These Things I've Done," which is probably the most perfect song I've heard in a long time. From the single, sign-of-life piano key at the beginning of the song to the pulsing drums at the end, the music and lyrics of "All These Things I've Done" inspire me to dream. Weird how a song can do that. The rest of the album is good, with lots of synthesizers and heavy guitar. There's one song where I could swear I'm listening to The Smiths, or at the very least, Morrissey. Overall, a great addition to any music collection that is rock-n-roll heavy. Enjoy.

Mostly killer material
Like an explosion of punk, new wave, pop, glam and disco, the Killers appropriately came out of Vegas. Their music is flashy, often hollow, but when used sparingly, can be a hell of a time. The first half almost never falters, leaving the second half gasping to keep up. Their first single, "Somebody Told Me," is still one of the most infectious, exciting and buzzworthy songs released at that time, but it's matched by credibly diverting and noteworthy tales. Sometimes the stories that frontman Brandon Flowers tells are a bit too earnest for their own good, but at least they're imaginative. Even the worst of his lyrical inventions are forgotten in the face of a resourceful musical bag of tricks, notably "All These Thing That I've Done," which emerges as the highlight because of its anthemic slow-build and gospel-ish bridge.

It was a lot more fun listening to the album during the first week I had it before they became a massive, over-hyped machine. No, it's not as good as some sang it to be (they were somewhat victims of the same sort of splintered whirlwind that eventually chewed up and regurgitated the Strokes), but you could do worse, including the music that the Killers are churning out today.

Best cuts: "All These Things That I've Done," "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," "Somebody Told Me," "Smile Like You Mean It," "Andy, You're a Star," "Everything Will Be Alright," "Mr. Brightside," "On Top"
