| A True Horror Movie |
If you are looking for a scary movie that wraps everything up nicely at the end with a feeling of hope, don't watch this movie. If you want to see a scary movie that sticks true to itself until the very end, this is the movie for you. I have never seen a movie so pure in it's genre. There is no happy ending here and why should there be? The movie's ending is different than the book, but I was so happy to see that the new ending is just as evil and insane as the rest of the movie. Frankly, I was shocked and surprised. This is a great story about a group of people trapped in a grocery store after a mist rolls in and covers the place. What's lurking in the mist is pure evil and the suspense will keep you barely able to breath. The acting is great, the special effects are awesome, but what sets this movie apart for me is the ending. One of the best horror films I have ever seen, top 3 of all time, but make sure you go into this movie expecting a pure horror movie complete with a horrific ending. If you want to watch insanity unfold, you should step into The Mist. |

The Mist
It's a shame I can't give this movie two ratings, one for the first hour of the movie (a five) and one for the last half of the movie (a one), so instead I'll split the difference and give it a three. I must admit, it's pretty darned scary and I was shaking after seeing it. But, like most Stephen King movies (and novels for that matter), it starts off great and finishes poorly. Take the creepy alien creatures and secret government operations from Dreamcatcher and mix in the apocalyptic end-of-the-world religious context of Dean Koontz's The Taking and you have The Mist.
SPOILER AHEAD*****A terrible storm hits a small town in Maine and knocks out electricity, so many of the town's citizens gather at the local grocery store to buy food and supplies. Then a man runs into the store covered in blood, followed by a very thick mist. He claims that something in the mist "took" his buddy and killed him. All he heard was screaming and was splattered with blood. So, the people in the store bar the front door and wait it out. Shortly thereafter, five of the men in the store end up in the storeroom for various reasons. Only two have common sense and the other three bozos decide to open up the loading dock door to see what's plugging up the air shaft for the generator exhaust. Bad move. One of those bozos gets grabbed by something with really big tentacles. Of course, the four shaken men try to relay this info to the others in the store, but no one believes them. Add to that the local religious psycho who starts gathering a mob to commit sacrifices to God and you've got one heck of a pickle (my daughter's word). So, it turns out that a secret government lab up on top of the town's mountain has been experimenting with opening doors to other dimensions. And, accidentally, they've let in some other dimension's monsters which are gigantic bug-like creatures with huge appetites. As soon as the religious nut finds out the government is responsible, she and her mob select the soldier to be the first sacrifice. And then the few coherent and reasonable-thinking people left decide to make a run for David's car (Thomas Jane). Only five of them make it to the car (the others are killed by various creatures, including really big spiders and flying dragonflies the size of dogs. They decide to drive as far as their fuel will take them and, during that drive, see all manner of exotic and gigantic creatures (much larger than dinosaurs). The world has changed and, when they run out of fuel, they decide to kill themselves, but have only four bullets. So Thomas Jane ends up killing everyone, including his eight year-old son, and then steps out of the car to meet his doom. Except the military has survived and rescued much of the town. They come driving up next to him and pass him by in what is a huge caravan of survivors, weapons, and military men. Too late for his kid, though. So, as other reviewers have said, he does spend much of the movie being the hero at the expense of his kid and he ends up shooting him in the end. Needless to say, I was disappointed with the ending, but after all the religious spouting during the last hour of the movie, it kind of fell in line with a typical Stephen King ending.*****END OF SPOILER
If you're looking to get scared and don't need a happy ending (and don't mind seeing people getting eaten by huge bugs), then this is for you. If you loved Dreamcatcher, this is totally for you. But if you're expecting something like The Fog or Halloween, you'll be greatly disappointed.
