Dead Alive is just the kind of movie I've been looking for. This gore fest from Peter Jackson includes humor, subtle serious parts not regarding the zombies (something that starts to haunt him), and a ______ load of blood that doesn't have anything to do with the eyes (I'm sensitive about that, though I've seen some eyeball gouging and I don't even flinch).
You probably know the story already. Lionel, a mama's boy, still lives with his mother and has to do with her nagging. She get's bitten by a monkey rat (I think it was used in one of the Cages in King Kong). The plot has little screen time regarding love scenes and serious matters. Every other scene has a bit of excitement in it, as I think it flows very well. They save the love scenes for the very end of the movie, so you don't have to wade through to much. I though it was enjoyable, and I hate romance movies (I prefer realistic romance, ya know?)
But you came for the gore, didn't you? Well, it's VERY over the top and rather unrealistic at times, though I feel that zombies are more strong and could do things like that to people. They do not place much emphasis on showing how much pain the people go through, as they pretty much don't show it at all besides some screaming. A couple of gore scenes I noticed seemed a bit like an unfinished stop motion type thing, though I do not really remember. Coupled with the story, it makes the whole thing perfect.
When watching this, don't expect some of the most realistic gore, let loose and enjoy how over the top it is. Peter Jackson actually does an awesome job an making sure it's over the top and entertaining, a bit believable, and with some action. If you like gore, you'll love some of the scenes, including the entire front part exposed of one of the zombies. And remember: Lawnmowers are a great murder device!
That's pretty much it. Check out the Evil Dead films too. Both avoid so much seriousness, though Dead Alive is more over the top and less realistic. And Bad taste, which I haven't seen yet, but looks pretty kick arse (some videos of it on youtube). |
