| Awesome Movie |
This movie brings back many fond memories of "Mr Hollands Opus", though different in many ways, it expounds on the inherent place music takes in many of our lives. The movie's message is incredibly strong, and delivered with an amazing punch, it will bring you to tears of joy more than once. The musical choreography is absolutely unbelievable, and will leave you with goosebumps again and again! Contains one of Robin Williams darker performances. Enjoy! |

| Comfort-Zone Bullseye |
This was a great movie... that is, if you like movies that fall into your comfort zones. And I do... sometimes. To be honest, I'm generally more a fan of action, horror, teen comedy, etc. So "August Rush" does not fit into my ideal of a good movie (and, for examples, I consider movies like Blade, Underworld, Oh Brother Where Art Thou [my all-time favorite movie], Friday the 13th, and American Pie great movies). However, this movie was good as far as being a feel-good movie. I have been stressed out, sick, and just generally sad over the past couple months, so this movie helped to lift my spirits quite a bit.
Admittedly, it is unrealistic and the plot depends wholly and completely on tons of deux et machinas. Everything that happens just happens. The father of the boy is never actually told that he is Evan's (August) father. And until that concert in the park, the boy doesn't know that either of them are his parents, and yet he does know (what?). The timeline of 11 years also does not help to make it realistic.
What this movie is trying to get across is that the boy is drawn by the music. As a musician myself, I can relate to this sentiment. It is true that music is out there, everywhere, and it controls those of us who listen. The following line from Led Zeppelin's "Houses of the Holy" says it best:
"Let the music be your master. Will you heed the master's call?"
That is the idea this movie tried to get across, and it's effort was good, if rushed and unbelievable.
Finally, I think this would have been much better as a novel. At least, as a novel, there'd be much more room to explain much of what seemed like well-planned coincidences and serious and obvious deux et machinas.
So why do I give this movie 4 stars? Because it is uplifting, helped me feel better, and it is a Comfort-Zone Bullseye. |
