| Good, but a bit overly long |
Like one reviewer put it, the movie is great but would be better as a 15 minute episode. The magic that made the series so great just doesn't translate well into a movie. It's difficult to make something so short funny for an hour or two.
In the movie Fry, Master Shake, & Meatwad try to get buff. They have some contraption that's obviously going to backfire horribly (which it does) since that's something that's a regular in the series. After some misadventures, they start the machine up & it turns into a horrible robotic monstrosity with Carl inside of it. That's pretty much the basic plot in a nutshell. Literally, it could have been shorter. Then again, they wouldn't have been able to put in the added backstory about where they came from and who their parents are. It's funny, but honestly the origin story could have been skipped. It was lackluster.
In the end the movie is good for entertainment value (i.e., it won't bore you), but not good as far as overall greatness goes. I wouldn't buy it full price $25-18, but it'd make a decent addition if you can get it at a bargain price. It's not worth that much. |

| ATHF:MFFT for DVD is a GREAT MOVIE |
If you enjoy the ATHF television show, then this movie is right for you. You'll love it. If you don't like the show, then why are you even looking at the movie? Seriously. If you like the show, you'll like this movie. If not, you won't. |

| Disappointment for this ATHF fan. |
The ATHF series has always involved a certain element of violence. Unfortunately, the writers of this show have embraced mayhem as a substitute for the insane humor that helped me initially mount the ATHF bandwagon way back in 2002. The writers of ATHF now apparently spend the majority of their creative time inventing new and gruesome ways to mutilate or kill Carl, Dr. Weird, Shakes, and others. ("OMG! They killed Carl! You b*stards!"). While I'm sure this is a tremendously entertaining process for the writers, I am unable to benefit from it.
I have no objection to violence in film per se -- I enjoy most horror movies and I grew up grinning at Daffy's unsuccessful attempts to avoid getting shot in the face during wabbit season. However, for me at least, violence must be shrewdly applied before it translates to humor. Unfortunately, after a couple of excellent initial seasons, the ATHF writers seem to have all but abandoned their knack for comic discernment.
For my tastes, this movie represents a failed opportunity to redeem the series. I hope the writers will someday return to whatever mindset, methodology, or chemical cocktail that produced the likes of "Balloonenstein," "Ol' Drippy," and "Space Conflict from Beyond Pluto." And *then* make a movie. |
