| Old Socket 754's Never Die.......Just Overclock 'em!! |
My #2 computer runs this CPU. The ECS nForce3-A motherboard it's mounted on allows me to overclock it from 2.2GHz to 2.75GHz. Of course that requires OCZ's top of the line CL2.5 DDR400 RAM (2 x 1GB). For old tech it is very fast, but it's obviously no match for modern hardware. Like the other post stated, it's a big step up from a Sempron and well worth the money. |

If you have an OLD AMD processor such as a Sempron that's socket 754 and want to speed things up a little than this Athlon 64 is a cheap way to go. Probably it's the ONLY cheap way to upgrade a 754 based unit because memory upgrades are very expensive because the memories are obsolete and not readily available. Please be aware that this processor runs very hot and you absolutely MUST have a decent cpu cooler fan attached. Also, if you're a total novice, this upgrade is NOT recommended as you need to open the computer up, find the old processor, gently remove it, install new one and the cooling fan and connect the cooling fan power to the appropriate pin connector on the motherboard. If you force anything, it is more than likely you'll bend the processor pins and totally make it worthless. I upgraded from an older Sempron 2800 and see noticeable improvement in speed. I run all major Windows XP programs (except for games) and it works great. |
